Brrrrrrracing for the Design Review

As the title suggests, the biggest challenge for our group this week was preparing for the Design Review.

One key takeaway from the previous week's meeting in lab was the need to alter our design. In the previous design, we had a large variation in the thickness of the base, which could result in deformation of the base as it cools unevenly. We ended up changing the design to have more uniform thickness in most of our parts. We designed the base with pins going up into the snowman, allowing for the snowman to be pressed onto the base to hold it tight. Similarly, the nose, eyes and buttons can be pressed into the snowman as well. The hat also presses onto the base in the same manner as the snowman.

In addition to making these press fit changes, we also changed the snowman's shape (again) to make it a "2.5D" shape, meaning it is partly 3D and partly 2D. The shape is similar to the 2D one from the last post but with filleted edges to give it a more natural look. The nose is also now pointing out away from the snowman instead of lying flat on the snowman to make it look better.

One of the possible "extras" we considered was making interchangeable hats to allow for some extra creativity in our sno-yos. Although these would potentially be time consuming to create individual molds for the different hats, the multiple hats idea is not critical to our design and could easily be scrapped if we run out of time making our yo-yos. All of the hats are mounted the same, with a hole to allow a press fit onto the base, to keep the interchangeability of the hats as high as possible.

Lastly, we worked on the powerpoint presentation for the design review this week. Our slides for the presentation can be accessed here: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1Z1XySSK7vimT1UPQuMJ4EISmvNEvooU31M-jXJaa8Vc/edit?usp=sharing

Thanks for reading, and we will see you next week!
